ANNUAL REPORT 2022 CHURCH IN LATIN AMERICA

FROM THE CHAIRMAN

My Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, This year so many of us have been praying for Bishop Rolando José Álvarez of the Diocese of Matagalpa in Nicaragua, where he was sentenced to 26 years in prison for his conscientious defense of human rights. Thanks to your generous donations to the Collection for the Church in Latin America of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), your gifts are sustaining 49 seminarians from the Diocese of Matagalpa as they prepare for the priesthood. When you give to this collection, you support far more than institutions. You support life, faith, hope, love, and renewal. Just as young people did in the early Church, young people today are responding to adversity with faith, and you are helping them to do so. Your gifts of over $6.2 million provided 251 grants to dioceses in Central and South America as well as the Caribbean islands. With your contribution, you helped sustain important ministries such as evangelization, vocations and seminary training, marriage support, and the promotion of human life and dignity. In Mexico, you are helping former prisoners renew their love for Jesus as they receive job training, therapy, and help with social integration. In the capital of Venezuela, you equipped the Church to become a leader in the fight against human trafficking. And in the Amazonian region of Peru, your gifts are bringing the love and sacraments of Christ to remote Indigenous villages.

You can read more about these impacts in the following report. To learn more about the Collection for the Church in Latin America, visit www.usccb.org/latin-america . In the name of Jesus, I thank you for all you have given.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Octavio Cisneros Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus, Diocese of Brooklyn Chairman, USCCB Subcommittee on the Church in Latin America

MEXICO Jesus told his followers that when they cared for prisoners, they cared for him. Acting on this, the Diocese of Iztapalapa founded Christ the Redeemer Center for Evangelization. Recently released prisoners receive spiritual and practical assistance to gain stable jobs, heal broken relationships, develop a healthy social life, and renew their relationship with God. The center does not charge for any of its services, which include workshops, retreats, recreational

The Collection for the Church in Latin America is supporting 49 seminarians in the major seminary of the Diocese of Matagalpa, while their bishop serves a 26-year prison sentence for stands he took as a matter of conscience. Bishop Rolando José Álvarez applied for this grant before his imprisonment so that the Church in Nicaragua will continue to grow strong, with new young leadership, even in the face of adversity. VENEZUELA The Archdiocese of Caracas is working to stop human trafficking and care for victims with help from the Collection for the Church in Latin America. The archdiocese runs intensive workshops to train regional leaders on topics such as prevention, prosecution, and reparations; the raising of awareness without further exploiting victims; and coordination with international anti-trafficking efforts. Victims and their families receive spiritual and psychological support, and those who wish to aid them receive training and certification. PERU In the Peruvian region of the Amazon, the Collection for the Church in Latin America provided essential assistance to establish 24 mission posts that serve Indigenous people. The itinerant priests who travel long distances between outposts scattered across rugged terrain now have a vehicle to travel in, a year’s worth of fuel, and a building in which to celebrate Mass and do ministry. The collection also subsidizes the formation of local lay leaders, who carry out pastoral ministry in the absence of a resident priest.
